February is know for our celebrations of love, chocolate and all things heart shaped. But the most important hearts is the one inside of you. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says, “Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.” Yikes! You don’t want that to be you. But what can you do? Today we spend so much of our time sitting and being sedentary. We sit while driving, working, eating, watching TV and more! Heck, I’ve been sitting here for the last hour trying to put together this blog post.
But there is good news! You can prevent heart disease as you make choices to manage your health each day. Let’s review some of those ways, shall we? One of first things you can do is switch up the way you’re seasoning your food. A lot of what you’re currently putting on your food contains a TON of salt. Try using spices or other flavor enhancing seasonings that don’t send your sodium intake through the roof. This is where Feast Mode Flavor seasonings come into play. They have low Sodium, Gluten Free and no MSG options. (I personally love their Butter Herb flavor – it’s versatile and so yummy!)
Next is trying to implement more physical activity into your day. This may seem like a big task, but let’s break it down for a second. If you stand every hour at work, and walk 50 steps down the hallway and 50 steps back that’s 100 steps per hour. An additional 800 steps for your 8 hour work day! The hard part isn’t necessarily doing the work, but planning for it in your busy schedule. And I totally get that. But as you start making these decisions they turn into habits, and those habits won’t feel so obligatory over time. You may even come to enjoy physical activity! Long story short, find small ways to get moving whether that’s in the gym or not. Your heart will thank you for it.
Finally, encourage those around you to make these choices as well! Your closest family members and friends will be your best ally. Working with others is not only motivating but keeps you accountable. I am a huge supporter of surrounding yourself with people that have the same goals or motives as you. If living a healthy lifestyle is important to you, or it’s the beginning of a new journey get others on board! Now that January is over and February is coming to an end, set a new goal for yourself. You don’t have to wait another 11 months ‘till January rolls around again! February is heart healthy month – so let’s decide together to be healthier and more proactive in our lifestyle choices. We don’t want any heartbreaks this Valentines…no pun intended.
